Safety Guide

We want you to enjoy using your mobile phone, free from worry, and free from fear of crime.

Regrettably, street crime has been on the increase in recent years and mobile phones are becoming a more popular target for thieves.

Virgin Mobile is working with the Home Office to help fight crime, and we are committed to educating our customers and the public about the simple precautions you can take to help keep safe, and reduce mobile phone theft.

What you can do:

  • Register your phone with us. If you report your phone stolen, we will then be able to bar your SIM card quickly and prevent it from being used by the thief to make calls at your expense, it also means we can keep any credit you may have on the SIM card. We can also record the IMEI ('international mobile equipment identity' or serial number) of the phone if you ask us to. Then we can disable the phone from being used with Virgin Mobile, T-Mobile and in most cases Orange SIMs, and help prevent thieves using it or selling it on. There are other benefits to registering in advance - it speeds things up as you will have to register anyway if you report your phone stolen - so that we ensure we don’t bar the wrong number.

  • Please make a note of these details; they may be needed by the police if you report your phone stolen:

    • Phone number: This is actually the number of your SIM card, and if your phone is lost or stolen a quick call to us means we can shut the SIM down so no one else can use it.

    • Phone serial number (IMEI): This stands for 'international mobile equipment identity' and it's the serial number for your phone. This 15-digit number can be found by keying *#06# into most phones or by looking behind the battery of your phone.

    • Phone PIN number: This is a PIN that you may have set up to prevent someone from making a call from your phone.

    • Fascia details/ make and model of phone.

  • Always use your phone's security lock code or PIN number.

  • Security mark the battery (and phone) with your postcode and street number or the first two letters of your house name. For more information on security marking, contact the crime prevention officer at your local police station.

  • When using your phone, remain aware of your surroundings and do not use it in crowded areas or where you feel unsafe.

  • Avoid wearing your phone where it is in public view. You may prefer to wear a handsfree headset so that you can keep your phone out of sight.

  • Keep it with you at all times and do not leave it unattended.
