How to switch to Virgin Mobile (If you already own a mobile phone)
17/05/2000
1. Check your mobile phone is compatible with the Virgin Mobile service. Here's how….
- see the note attached. It shows the most popular mobile phones that are compatible (there's about 10 million of them out there!)… and some that aren't.
- call Virgin Mobile on 0845 6000 600 and tell us which phone you have. We'll be able to tell you whether your phone is compatible.
- or check the Virgin Mobile website www.virgin.com/mobile. This has a list of compatible mobile phones. (Live 24/05/00)
2. Check whether you are in or out of contract with your current mobile phone company. Here's how….
- if you have a pre-pay phone you don't need to worry. You should be free to move (after checking point 3 below!) whenever you like.
- if you pay monthly but have had your mobile phone for more than 12 months you're almost certainly out of contract and will be free to move.
- if you are paying monthly and have recently signed up you're probably in a year-long contract. It's usually best to see the contract out.
- but if you're in contract and only have a few months left, it may pay to switch anyway.
3. Check whether your phone is 'locked' to your existing mobile phone company. Here's how….
- call your mobile phone company and ask them to unlock your phone because you want to put another SIM card in it.
- you may need to give them one month's notice for them to do this.
- some mobile phone companies charge a fee for unlocking a phone. This is normally about £35.
4. Put your Virgin Mobile SIM card into the back of your phone and that's it! You are connected to the Virgin Mobile service with cheaper calls, and most phones also get access to Virgin Xtras: 15% discounts on music, videos, games; and 10% off Virgin Holidays worldwide!
- You can even transfer your old mobile phone number if you want to keep it. Just call Virgin Mobile on 0845 6000 600 and we'll explain how you can do this too.
