Virgin Mobile has smashed its quarter three sales targets by attracting 128,393 new customers to the service in the last three months. Since launch in November 1999, in excess of 412,000 people have become Virgin Mobile customers - a figure that has surpassed city predictions for the company.
Around half of the new sales in the quarter were first-time mobile phone buyers; the remainder were switchers from other networks. Plans to broaden distribution using other High Street retailers outside the Virgin Group - one deal was announced with JS Sainsbury this week - will further increase the rate of growth for the company.
Virgin Mobile is confident of reaching its target of one million customers by Spring 2001, making it the UK's fastest mobile startup.
Comments Sir Richard Branson, chairman of Virgin Mobile: 'Our rate of growth now exceeds any other operator in the UK; and we are delighted that our contribution has helped our joint venture partner, One2One, take the number one slot in terms of customer growth this quarter.'
'Virgin Mobile's combination of cheap calls day and night, no peak rates and no monthly line rental is proving to be a winner with British consumers. We are confident of maintaining our rapid growth and giving the established operators a run for their money.'
