16/05/2002

Best value World Cup 2002 service on the market

  • Up-to-the-minute audio content via the 4321 voice portal service

  • Exclusive text alerts to Virgin Mobile customers

  • England Supporters Kit to customise your phone
  • As the nation works itself into a football frenzy, Virgin Mobile announces the launch of its World Cup 2002 service. If you thought the race to launch the best World Cup service on the market was all over…it is now!

Running through the build up of the World Cup until the end of June, football-crazy Virgin Mobile customers who want to stay on the ball simply need to pay a one-off payment of £4.99 – less than half the price of many other World Cup services offered by rivals. Customers will get a whole host of World Cup goodies including:

  • Text alerts for England and Ireland detailing:

    • - half-time and full time results
      - goal flashes as they happen
      - news on team line-ups
      - notification of red cards as they happen
      · Full time results from all the other matches
      · World Cup headline news

And, by dialling 4321* customers can tune into what's new from Virgin Mobile's team of roving reporters attending the World Cup, giving them unrivalled access to up-to-the-minute news, reports, pre-match and post-match reviews, gossip, updates and exclusive interview content everyday, throughout the day. This means instant access to the top stars!

Virgin Mobile has also launched an England Supporters kit containing all they need to turn their phone World Cup crazy, which at £14.99 includes a St George’s Cross fascia (suitable for the Nokia 3310 or 3330), a range of World Cup ‘themed’ ringtones and graphics and a voicemania ‘celebrity’ voicemail greeting. The voicemania options include a Sven Goran Eriksson voicemail, so you can rest assured that when Beckham is taking that vital corner kick you don’t have to miss a call (and with Virgin Mobile, voicemail is free!)!

The World Cup 2002 service is quick and easy to set up. Customers either call 2002 from their Virgin Mobile or visit the Virgin Mobile website and follow the simple instructions.

Steven Day, corporate affairs director at Virgin Mobile said: “For those football fans who aren’t going to be brushing up on their Japanese skills this summer, this football crazy service will bring the action home to them as it happens. Fans get to experience all the build-up to games, after-match analysis and interviews straight from the players involved - it really is the next best thing to flying to Japan!”

Virgin Mobile already offers free text message alert service to customers via VirginXtras, which include half-time and full time football results. Similar results services are charged for by most of Virgin Mobile’s rival networks and mobile services providers. However Virgin Mobile’s portfolio of Premiership and Nationwide League football services are free all year round, along with lottery results, horoscopes, sports and entertainment services and is the only network to cover results for both England and Ireland.
