Virgin Mobile has broken all sales records, reporting its largest ever quarterly sales figure, best ever Christmas trading period, and its strongest ever yearly performance since its launch in November 1999.
During the fourth quarter 2002 Virgin Mobile bucked the UK high street trend of slow Christmas trading to outperform its targets. The company attracted 370,530 net new customers during October, November and December of 2002, which was up 60% on the previous quarter, and increased its customer numbers by 65% year on year.
Sales for the whole of 2002 were also the best in Virgin Mobile’s history. A target of 2.1 million customers was passed by some margin, with 938,420 joining over the 12 months, resulting in a base of almost 2.4m by the end of December.
Virgin Mobile’s turnover in 2002 was also ahead of target, reaching £290m by the end of the year.
Virgin Mobile has also reported its revenue figures, with an annual ARPU of £136 (see table 2), which is among the highest of any prepay ARPU in the industry.
Virgin Mobile’s Sir Richard Branson said: “2002 was the best year in Virgin Mobile’s history; the year in which it truly proved to be the great success we always knew it would be. It was the year we acquired our two-millionth customer; it was the year we went into profit; and it was the year our turnover reached £290 million. 2003 is going to be even better – by the end of the year we will have more than three million customers, and a turnover in excess of £400m. Virgin Mobile is proving to be one of the most formidable companies in the Virgin empire, and one of the most dynamic in the telecoms industry.”
