Virgin Mobile, the UK’s fastest growing mobile network, today confirmed that it is extending its sponsorship involvement with the British Superbike Championship. The company announced that it is to be the title sponsor of the newly created Yamaha R6 Cup in a bid to find the UK’s next Superbike Champion.
The newly formed one-manufacturer championship has attracted a wealth of young talent from all over the British Isles and while each of the twenty-five riders, aged between sixteen and twenty-two, compete on identical Yamaha R6s, they will all be gunning for the coveted first prize of a place in the Virgin Mobile British Superbike team in 2004.
The R6 Cup is the brainchild of Virgin Mobile Yamaha British Superbike team-boss Rob McElnea. The former British Champion and GP rider said: “The idea of the championship is two-fold. Not only are we looking for future World Champions but we are also safeguarding the future of this
brilliant sport. We have a wealth of biking talent in this country and we feel that the championship will provide them with a perfect platform from which they can launch their careers.”
James Kydd, brand director at Virgin Mobile said: "Motorcycle racing is one of the best loved sports in Britain and Virgin Mobile is delighted to extend its involvement with the UK’s British Superbike Championship by sponsoring the Yamaha R6 Cup. This junior championship has attracted young and determined riders and by supporting them in the early stages of their career, we believe it will provide them with the opportunity to achieve their ambition of racing at the top level, this in turn, will result in a healthy and competitive series. These up-and-coming riders are the sport’s future and they have a strong appeal with our youth customer base which we believe will continue to grow as a result."
The first round of the Virgin Mobile Yamaha R6 Cup will take place at Silverstone Circuit, Northampton on Sunday 30th March.
