Virgin Mobile scoops gong at Mobile News Awards 2003

01/04/2003

Virgin Mobile, the UK’s fastest growing mobile network, scored a major success at the Mobile News Awards on Thursday by winning the award for Best Local Advertising, Marketing and PR Campaign and also receiving commendations for both National Advertising Campaign and its outstanding Customer Service.

The company won the award for its successful Big Red House campaign, a university-focused promotion that offered ten students the chance to win a house rent-free for a year. The activity created significant brand presence among the student community, with on-campus posters, guerilla marketing, student media promotions, a bespoke website and PR-driven editorial. Singling the campaign out, the judges praised it as a highly targeted brand-raising campaign that achieved excellent results.

Virgin Mobile also received two commendations at the ceremony. The recent ads featuring Wyclef Jean, were commended in the National Advertising Marketing and PR Campaign category. The campaign, which featured Wyclef’s attempts to escape from trailer park hell, only to be arrested for breach of contract, has developed a cult following in the UK and have been extremely well received by consumers. The final commendation of the night was for Virgin Mobile’s acclaimed customer service.

Steven Day, Corporate Affairs Director, Virgin Mobile, said: “We’ve had some fantastically cheeky campaigns over the last twelve months which really reflect what the Virgin Mobile brand stands for. These awards are a recognition of the fantastic success we’ve had from our irreverent approach, which has seen students slug it out for Big Red Houses and Wyclef pass the soap in the jail house.”

The awards took place on Thursday, 27th March at the London Hilton on Park Lane.
