Virgin Mobile launches £5 voucher

07/10/2003

Virgin Mobile, the UK’s fastest growing mobile network, launches a £5 voucher for its pre-pay customers this week. The new voucher comes at a time when most other network operators are shifting their focus away from pre-pay and, as part of this, are withdrawing traditional vouchers. Most of the other operators prefer to market contracts that lock people into a twelve-month payment plan.

Retaining its consumer champion status, Virgin Mobile decided to introduce a £5 voucher after its award-winning* customer services team recorded an influx of calls from people requesting a lower-denomination voucher. Greater customer service and flexible ways to pay are becoming increasingly important given the mobile market is slowing down in terms of growth and higher churn rates.

Graeme Hutchinson, sales and marketing director at Virgin Mobile, said: “Many of our customers are young and we listen to what they want and they want to be able to spend less on topping up. The same applies to those people who are sick of forking out larger amounts to keep their credit topped up. Some of them have even told us that they have been turned away from other operators because they are not considered high enough spenders. Virgin Mobile simply wants customers to pay for what they use in the way they choose – some of our competitors persuade customers to sign annual contracts and buy expensive bundles of texts and calls.”

The launch will be supported by a £60,000 marketing campaign which includes trade print advertising, direct communication to retailers via distribution partners and bespoke point of sale materials. The vouchers will be available direct and online and in the majority of Virgin Mobile’s third party distribution outlets.
